I rented this game a few days ago and have been playing it on and off since then. I was expecting more depth from this game and a better story that would possibly matter in the game. The graphics are amazing, and driving around what appears to be a genuine Martian landscape is cool. But, once you get over the initial awesomeness of the graphics, I found myself underwhelmed. The missions are repetitive, the storyline doesn't seem to matter much, and your supposed allies in the game are completely useless. I have found myself bored with the game already. It is a shame since it seems another month or two of fleshing out the story and putting in some interesting missions would have made a big difference........Oh, well glad it was a rental.

I actually enjoyed this game for the first couple territories/hours. I would even say I loved the demo on xbox live! After that, however, the game gets so repetitive it's rediculous. Go destroy this building. Blow this up. Take out that truck. Ugh, I couldn't take it anymore and it got really boring so I took it back. If all you want to do is destroy buildings, use some interesting weapons, and drive some admittedly cool vehicles then you may enjoy this game. I just expected more depth.

Maybe my hopes were WAY too high when I got this... I LOVED the old ones, and I like Saints Row, so I figured it'd be good... I mean I played the demo for it like 90 times and loved it more and more each time... the actual game though, was EXTREMELY boring and tedious. Like when you die and have to go to a safehouse 20 freaking miles away! I was also kind of hoping for big destructible citys on Mars too. I was hoping for skyscrapers and maybe some planes. I'm not evil, but that'd just be amazing... can you imagine... flying a plane towards a building... parachute out and watch the destruction ensue....

In the end, it just seems like a glorified tech demo for the geo-mod 2... which I was thinking that, then saw a review saying the same exact thing.

I'm hoping maybe They'll put the geo-mod 2 engine in Saints Row 3, then you'll have a F-ING GAME!

This review is going to be unpopular, but it's what I honestly think. I picked up RFG the day it came out, I threw it in and here are the impressions I got:

Pro:
Interesting concept/storyline, caught me attention right off the bat.
Decent graphics, nothing groundbreaking. Physics/graphics seem well matched to the havoc engine.
Controls seems somewhat intuitive, and the learning curve is short.

Con:

The first thing I took issue with is the unrealistic idea of a guy running around Mars knocking down buildings with of all things a sledgehammer? I realize you don't have to necessarily use this method after the first few levels and the idea is that he's a miner, but it's still kind of asinine and just doesn't 'fit' well.
Game play gets repetitive really quickly. It's the same 5 or 6 missions recycled ad nauseum. I had to set the controller down after about 3 hours because of this. It held me for a short time, but I soon found myself just driving around blowing stuff up, but even that gets old as there's only so much you can do.
Combat is frustrating and tiring and poorly conceptualized.
It seems like a sophomoric attempt at Grand Theft Auto: Mars. This game might have been earth-shattering 5 or 6 years ago, but it just kind of limps in right now. I boxed it up and sold it off at about $10 less than what I bought it for. I'd recommend you rent before you buy this turd.

Okay Ive played both Prototype and Red Faction so my review will be slightly skewered. First off I want to say I bought and played Prototype first. Then I read a bunch of reviews about Red Faction (mostly on this site) that say "Red Faction Red Faction" so like a doofus I purchased it. (this is where the "I played Prototype first comes in")

Prototype dominates. Compared to Prototype, Red Faction felt slow, sluggish, and semi-retarded. The driving controls were alot harder (not user-friendly), targeting slower. I know these are two completely different games but in certain aspects they are alike. For instance, hit-and-run techniques are used in both. Where Prototype you can enter a fray, destroy w/e it is you need to destroy and then get out, in Red Faction you face endless amounts of EDF that keep on coming. The Guerillas that assist you have downs syndrome (ie get in your way or shoot you in the back) and you can only hold 120 rounds of your regular auto rifle (starting off). The only way to escape once you go red status in Red Faction is to die it seems. Rarely did I make it to a vehicle to escape to a safehouse. Also you should be able to "jack" vehicles, for example when those EDF are driving and stop for a second you should be able to open their door and throw them out. The game should progress where if they are going to send 20 - 30+ EDF Soldiers to your location, its later in the game, not when I can only afford level one armor. Oh and driving a vehicle was awkward, aiming a weapon and switching weapons, though simple should have followed a Modern Duty style, just awkward (maybe that is my fault not used to it)

By the way in no shape or form am I endorsing Prototype, Im just comparing it. Also, I will admit this is my first Red Faction type game and it just seems...ugh. Maybe I need to give it more time but when I have to stop a convoy and I cant "jack" a vehicle and can't destroy enough of them because Im getting shot or run over by the endless EDF, it gets tiresome. Maybe this game aint for me

I despise the fact that I bought Red Faction, Although what made my vision skewered was Prototype was played first, was faster, sleeker, and way more user-friendly game. Play Prototype then play Red Faction. Hell just watch Prototypes intro and when you ask your self "whoa wait...I can do all that?" Yes you can
